Zanskar River Rafting Expeditions

zanskar-river-raftingThi is a two-week journey would give you an opening to discover little seen parts of western Ladakh. So be prepare for attractions and sounds of monasteries, drums, fluttering prayer flags, canyons and whitewater that is far away from your dreams and opportunity.

You would start your trip by acclimatizing for a few days at Leh town, where you can as well visit olden palaces and monasteries. Drive past 7000 meter high mountains and awesome glaciers, to start the river run in the Zanskar valley at 12,000 feet. Spend the first two days enjoying the moderate whitewater where you get a break to enjoy the beautiful landscape and natural surroundings. Zanskar offers stunning physical features, unlike anything you have seen in all of India or the world. At the end of the Zanskar valley, prepare for the impressive Zanskar Canyon, as well referred to as the Grand Canyon of Asia. The walls of the Canyon go up 1000s of feet off the river bed. The Zanskar canyon is a grade 4 section and proposes remarkable white water rafting and kayaking.

Spend most of the day on the river Zanskar and setup camp late in the hours of daylight. Enjoy simple meals by the river side and laze in the afternoon or stroll and travel around the area. Enjoy a fantastic night sky filled with twinkling stars, while you sit around a camp fire and listen to stories of the many runs our guides have done on their favorite river. You will as well find out the rich culture and history of the natives as we make our way down the Zanskar, and take back memories that will keep you excited for a long time to come.

Zanskar River Rafting Trip Itinerary

Day 01: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Delhi to Leh. An hour long flight from Delhi to Leh will take you over the Greater Himalaya where one will be able to observe the K2 amongst many other magnificent views. After transferring to the hotel we take a break and acclimatize. Overnight stay at Leh hotel.

Day 02: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Leh - Acclimatize to the altitude of 11,000 ft. A visit to the Hemis and Thikse monasteries will be organized. Visit the Ecological Centre or walk around Leh and get a feel of the culture of the state. You could as well check out the Tibetan market for souvenirs. You can take in the superb sights of peaks across the horizon and prepare for the drive to Kargil the next morning. Overnight stay at Leh hotel.

Day 03: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Leh- Kargil. The drive to Kargil over the Fotu La Pass at 14,000 ft. is spectacular. One will stop at the Lamayuru monastery that belongs to the ‘Red Hat’ sect. And we will stop at the stone statue of the Maitreya at Mulbek. Overnight stay at Kargil hotel.

Day 04: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Spend most of the day driving from Kargil to Rangdum. As we go through Panikar and Parkachik, we take in awesome sights of the twin peaks Nun and Kun, both above 7000 mt, many hanging glaciers and lush meadows. Overnight stay at camp.

Day 05: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

This is the final day of driving before we get on the river. We journey over the Pensi La pass at 14,000ft. To enter the Zanskar valley and get some marvelous views of the Drung Durung glacier and the Zanskar range. The opening point for the journey is on the Doda River, a tributary of Zanskar, at Remala. Get a good night’s sleep as one anticipates the first day on the river. Overnight stay at camp.

Day 06: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Remala to Karsha. After a talk on safety procedures and fundamental directions for paddling by our experienced and competent river guides you are ready to begin your expedition. The river start on with a grade 3 section a great way to get your body exercised and a good introduction to river rafting for the first timers. Raft for about 4 hours long with a lunch break on the riverside. Set up camp at the confluence of the Doda and the Tsarap Chu rivers. One can opt to rest and enjoy the camp or hike up to the Karsha Monastery. Overnight stay at camp.

Day 07: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Karsha to Honia. Get up at sunrise to see and photograph the sunrise light on the Karsha Monastery, and then get on the river to head out to Honia. Enjoy practicing your paddling skills on grade 3 rapids and prepare to enter the Zanskar Canyon. Amazing tourist attractions of the Zanskar range and the Greater Himalayan ranges as the valley begins to narrow down. Overnight stay at camp.

Day 08: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Honia-Nyerak. Pack up and get moving for about 25 km on the river and enter the canyon to reach Nyerak. This is a grade 3 section and warms you up for the river rafting that is to follow in the days to come. At Honimul, the last village, we enter a spectacular canyon. The banks of the river now give way to mountain walls that rise 1000s of feet above you. We run some terrific rapids today, break for lunch, then raft some more before calling it a day and setting up camp below the Nyerak village. This campsite is one of the few sites in the canyon where one can camp and is ideal for a Layover day to travel around the area.

Day 09: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

This is a day ear-marked for rest. You could decide to hike to the Nyerak village, mingle with the locals and visit their homes, or calm down and enjoy a break under the Weeping Willows, splash about in the camp stream and get ready for one more thrilling day on the river. Overnight stay at camp.

Day 10: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

A 35 km river trip takes us through the core of the Zanskar canyon and brings us to Lamaguru at the confluence with Markha River. Here we will meet grade 4 rapids on this stretch. Take break for lunch at a beautiful place by a waterfall from the canyon wall. Paddle further through the eye-catching Red canyon and campsite for the night. Prepare to be amazed by some of the most strange sights and colors today, all courtesy of Mother Nature. Overnight stay at camp.

Day 11: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Raft grade 4 rapids till the take out at Nimu. Past the Chilling village we will encounter outstanding white water as Zanskar prepares to meet the Indus at Nimu. This is the end of your river expedition. Drive back to Leh. One can decide to calm down under a hot shower and sleep off or do some last minute shopping. Overnight stay at Leh hotel.

Day 12: Zanskar River Rafting Trip

Back to Delhi. The flight back to Delhi will take you over the Great Himalayas and let you to bid farewell to the mythical land of Ladakh until next time.
